After months of waiting, young Will now has his helmet. Well, technically it is a cranial band. We got fitted for it last Thursday and then received the helmet today.
Each helmet is custom made. First, the child is put into a stocking mask to keep the hair slicked down. Then, an imaging machine is used to capture his head in 3-D. From that the band is made. Here’s a youtube of the process. This is pretty much exactly how Will’s clinic looks.
We’re probably looking at two months or so for wearing the band. He’ll be in it 23 hours a day during that time, with an hour off for bathing. It is light, and so far it doesn’t seem to bother him too much. Every once in awhile he notices the velco strap and gives it a good tug.
